“Demonstrating the Craft,” Analyzing Angles

Analyzing the angles and relationships between key areas of the figure is an important part of the life drawing process.  At the Watts Atelier, we embrace comparative measurement techniques in our drawings.  This practice often relies on comparing and analyzing the angles between features to obtain proportional accuracy in your drawing.  Note how Watts Atelier Instructor Ben Young analyzes the angles and relationships between the features (most notably between the head and hand, the foot to ankle, and the back of the head to the shoulder)in this figure drawing demo, completed for his students in class last week.

If you find yourself struggling with proportions, be mindful to pay particular attention to the angles and relationships between key areas on the figure.  As you grow more aware of such spacial relationships, the proportional accuracy in your drawings is sure to improve.
