Human anatomy is a complex subject that must be broken down into smaller, more digestible chunks of information in order to be learned effectively. It’s for this reason that this class will focus specifically on the human torso. Both the front and back of the torso will be covered but only the most essential parts of both will be included. The first week will be an academic breakdown of torso anatomy. Week 2 will cover both the gesture and the underlying forms of the torso. Weeks 3 and 4 will bring all of this information together into linear and mapped torso drawings. Week 5 will be about how to bring a torso drawing up to a more finished/rendered level.

Brian Knox

Brian Knox began studying full time at the atelier in 2012 and began teaching in 2015. As a student his emphasis was on logical and simple head and figure construction. As an instructor his dedication to teaching full time has allowed him to focus on finding clear explanations for complicated concepts and, when combined with his gestural/structural approach to head and figure drawing, has helped countless students tackle difficult subjects over the last 5 years. Brian’s ultimate goal is to produce a series of head and figure drawing books that rival those of the great instructors of the past (i.e. Bridgman, Loomis) but in a more modern format. Each term brings him one step closer to realizing that goal.

Alannah Rose

Alannah Rose received her B.A. in Studio Art from Dartmouth College in 2013. She worked as a graphic designer for a variety of clients in the non profit, food, and gaming sectors before beginning her studies online with Watts Atelier in 2019. After studying with the Online school and Streaming programs, she left her career in design, moved to Southern California, and began training in person in 2021. She is currently teaching and pursuing a career as a professional illustrator.
