This course will focus on the development of an intuitive color sense. We will explore the nature of color, color harmonies and perceptions, and the physical properties of the various oil paints and manufacturers. Fun exercises include block studies, still lifes, and eventually the live portrait model. Learn to allow color to work for you. Break away from ridged color mixing and open your eyes to a new way of seeing color!

Materials

  • Painting Grounds (Preferred Brand: Fredrix)
    • 9”x12” to 16”x20” (Please stay within these size perimeters.)
    • Canvas: Fredrix prestretched canvas: red or green label
    • Panels: Fredrix archieval canvas panels
  • Brushes (Preferred Brands: Robert Simmons Signet Bristles and Langnickel Sables)
    • An assortment of rounds, filberts and flats in sable and bristle.
    • Below is an assortment of recommended sizes in bristles and sables.
    • (Note: It is not necessary to have all of these sizes but a good idea to work towards getting them.)

Meadow Gist

Meadow Gist has studied and taught at Watts Atelier for the past 15 years. She began her art career in the corporate field painting displays and murals for a major retail chain. Her work has been exhibited as a finalist in the International Artist Magazine’s Still Lifes and Florals Competition 2006 and as a “Top 50” selection at Salon International 2007.
