The goal of this phase is to provide you with a working understanding of the essential building blocks of all drawing, and ultimately painting, in the Watts method.  You will be introduced to concepts such as value scales, essential geometric shapes used to breakdown the complex forms of the head and figure, the four essential edges used to make an object look three dimensional, negative vs. positive shapes, and other fundamentals.

Stressing proper shading and understanding of basic forms, in this phase, you’ll work through drawing basic shapes with simple lighting. While also getting familiar with these basic forms, this exercise will help you get familiar with the materials that we use at Watts Atelier.
